The story was well chosen by Hal Roach as a good vehicles for Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy although it is not one of their major performances; the music can sometimes interfere with the Laurel and Hardy humour but the drinking scene confirms their combined genius and is outstanding. Originally called 'Fra Diavolo', this film is based on the 1830 comic operatta of that name by Daniel F Auber.
